Kyveli: A most enjoyable meze stop in Kypseli

Walking through the densely populated Kypseli, a sweet marriage of an old urban Athens with today’s frenzies inevitably comes to mind. Passing through the small streets with the little shops and apartment buildings, you reach the square of Agios Georgios, a vocal point of Kypseli where you are overwhelmed with sentiments. Inspired by the atmosphere of the area, Kyveli emits memories from our childhood with warmness. The elegant decoration of the restaurant, the colours, the special touches and the uniqueness of the dishes lead to an unforgettable experience.

The name, in a topography that highlighted with many of the most popular and iconic theatres of Athens, has been given as a tribute to the unforgettable Greek actress Kyveli Adrianou. At the same time, her name is very similar to that of Kypseli and thus you can always remember this beautiful place that you can visit.

The idea came to life in March of 2016 with the aim of excellent service, quality food and a touch of gastronomic modernism that can make a difference. The owner Giorgos Anagnostou, returning to Kypseli,  wanted to recreate the recipes of his grandma Beba that came from Smyrna. With the help of chef Giorgos Kontas, the result expresses a warm combination of tradition and Smyrnaic philosophy. ‘A tasteful journey that captures deliciousness with a modern need for authenticity and history on a dish.’

An ideal start can be made by ordering the refreshing salad Popeye & Swee’pea, with arugula, tender spinach, lettuce, red cabbage, cherry tomatoes, beetroot, chicken fillet, parmesan and carob vinaigrette; the famed pumpkin meatballs with a yogurt dip and the fried liver. As for the main course, there are some irresistible selections of meats and seafood. Among the must-try are the skioufichta (traditional Cretan pasta) with pork fillets with Karpathos’ unique recipe with soft feta cheese and an excellent ‘harakiri’ chicken grilled on a metal spit. For a sweet finish, save «some room» for Smyrna halva dessert.

Kyveli is open daily since noon till 1:00 at night. Always hiving, you can see people coming for lunch, relaxed groups late at the afternoon enjoying some meze and people dining before or after going to a nearby theatre, in the nicest and heartfelt environment.  A meeting point full of warmth, for a culinary journey with which you will want to book a table for your return sooner than later!
