Sometimes we contplate that the people living downtown are the luckiest in the city, with the gratification of having everything within walking distance and the word “unsatisfied” not having a place in their dictionary, since the city centre has something for every taste. Even for those who nag and say that nothing decent has remained and that food in Athens has nothing left to offer, Okra has another answer.
Opening its charming rooftop last year – apart from the majestic view of the “Holy Rock” Acropolis, which no matter how many times you stare at it lit up, we will always feel the same awe and pride – brought with it a new culinary reality, one that is highly revolutionary: The Core of its philosophy lies in magical, creative Greek food coming hand-to-hand with a special highlight for the treasures of Greek micro-producers, a curated wine list and inspired cocktails. Thus, everything we need on our night out, in order for it to be unforgettable.
Oriented towards the famed “Xenia” Greek hospitality – which entails generosity and kindness to all guests – Okra unfolds seasonality in a menu that is refreshed frequently to keep our interest primed and sharpened. You sense it in the warm sourdough bread with tsalafouti cream that arrives on the table as a welcome gift, you confirm it in the sensational beef tartare with pickled okra and egg yolk confit, slightly spicy and delicious.
Here, even the most demanding palate finds comfort and warmth, discovers surprises, new ideas and techniques, always mapping paths connecting to tradition, as for example in the perfect grilled beef marrow, served with wonderful handmade pickles. Nowhere else, will you find fish like here, the charcoal-grilled octopus with stewed shallots and caper leaves or the cod with local greens and caviar, all rich, elegant and truly delicious.
The refined flavours are fully revealed in the worthy wine pairing, its team is there to guide you and suggest the ideal bottle that will ‘click’ to your preferences and the dishes you have chosen. The labels come mainly from Greek vineyards, with apt, special choices and notable producers. There is also a comprehensive menu with signature cocktails that can captivate you.
And all this, in an environment that spreads its refinement like an embrace, scandi-chic minimalism, nice pale colours, simplicity that is not austerity but visual relaxation. Once a week, on Fridays or Saturdays, there is also live music with young bands and/or dj’s who undertake to excite us with upbeat mainstream and disco music. If one downtown restaurant encourages us this season to rediscover our city’s landscape, it’s none other than Okra.
