For some, coffee is just a habit. For others, it’s a ritual. And when we talk about ritual, the name Holy Mug suddenly makes perfect sense. Like a promise that whatever ends up in that cup, or arrives at your table, has first passed through the sacred chalice of quality.

Behind the project are Christina Koumbouni and Giorgos Georgantidis, two people with a deep and genuine connection to specialty coffee. Christina brings international distinctions in traditional Greek coffee competitions, experience in building the coffee team at Costa Navarino, and an active role as an instructor at tourism schools. Giorgos comes with many years behind the machines and solid technical expertise. In 2021, the time was right for them to create their own specialty coffee spot at the port of Kalamata. Bright, laid back, with seating both indoors and outdoors, it carries the feeling of permanent holidays.

Coffee clearly takes center stage. In collaboration with the much loved Samba Coffee Roasters, Holy Mug serves espresso blends from Brazil along with a constantly rotating selection of six to seven single estate coffees. The same coffees are available on the shelves to take home in beans or ground, while the menu also includes matcha for those looking for a different kind of morning indulgence.

Food, however, plays an equally strong role alongside coffee. Breakfast is based on local products and everything is handmade, with options such as kagianas, fried eggs with bacon, and refreshing yogurt bowls with honey and granola. Brunch raises the bar with pancakes in savory versions like croque madame or with smoked salmon, sour cream and poached egg, as well as combinations with turkey, cheese, spinach and perfectly poached eggs that strike an ideal balance between comfort and satisfaction.

Sweet options have their own distinct character, too, with pancakes filled with bougatsa cream, salted caramel and almond brittle, or with praline and seasonal fruits. The menu also includes sandwiches, both vegan and with pastrami or chicken, as well as an open sandwich with grilled mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, truffle infused mayonnaise and a fried egg. The offering is rounded out with refreshing salads and hot soups for colder days, while desserts close the experience with cookies and cakes such as carrot cake, red velvet and vegan brownie.

Open daily from morning until the afternoon, Holy Mug also functions as a space for knowledge, hosting coffee seminars and educational activities. A small corner of Kalamata that proves that when the same care goes into both the cup and the plate, the result is truly memorable.
