Wine Barrique: Wine and food combined in beautiful harmony at Imittos

For people who want a more curated type of experience in their nights out, there are certain places guaranteeing satisfaction; these are the wine restaurants and the wine bars with a culinary expert kitchen. At Wine Barrique this combination is accommodated by a literal combination of the charismatic sommelier Anna Nine and her partner and very capable chef Tassos Papadakis.

In their open-hearted and warm wine bar in Imittos Square, you will be “booked” to some very interesting wine flights among indigenous grape varieties. These “flights” – as they have come to be called – can happen while nibbling on inspired delicacies like you’ve never tasted before. The black metal wine cellar – the focal point of the shop – as well as its wooden elements and a large wine barrel at the entrance, create a stylish embrace.

Something truly essential at Wine Barrique is the fact that almost all of its wines can be enjoyed by the glass in 75 and 150 ml servings. Every Thursday a special made plate of the day is served upon order, while almost every Monday tastings and wine pairings with guest winemakers and producers take place on its premises.

Anna can help reveal the secrets of every label, explain its origin, terroir and special characteristics; while Tassos sets about creating the perfect complement dish for your selection.

The handmade carob bread with sautéed shrimp drenched in ouzo and paired with a magical, velvety smoked tarama mousse made from mackerel roe is a definitive season specialty, one-of-a-kind and mouth-watering. So is the delicious bruschetta made from fluffy villagio bread, with smoked beef shank, metsovone smoked cheese, roasted tomatoes, fried onions and dijonnaise mustard.

The menus change frequently: The duo frequently rethinks their choices, so you’ll always find a guest bottle or an inspired dish crafted by the chef; e.g. one month you can treat yourself to the coolness of a ‘Flevaris’ wine from the Lilantio area and the next of another rare Greek variety, with another special dish, inspired from the roots of the Greek cuisine.

Made for casual evenings, but also more… special occasions, such as a first date or a corporate event, Wine Barrique proves that the neighbourhoods never lose their glamor or their banqueting character, and are here for us to discover, from whichever part of Athens we come from. For a sweet finale, save “some space” for a handmade xerotigano from Chania with poured kaimaki ice cream, walnuts and honey on top.
