Mama Ghanoush: Athens fresh double-concept spot serves epic coffee and the best falafel!

I hope you returned from vacation with a strong appetite for new culinary adventures. Athens has refreshed itself and is ready to introduce us to everything new happening in town. Although I’ve already discovered my favorite newly arrived spot: Mama Ghanoush. Two spaces, two doors, two worlds converging under the sign of pure enjoyment. A double concept built on love, quality and a touch of the Middle East. Where are we located? On Anthimou Gazi Street, one alley up from Karytsi Square, in a spot that holds a quieter atmosphere amid the hustle and bustle of downtown. There, Mama Ghanoush reveals its dual character.

From the red door, starting around 8:30 am, flows the aroma of freshly roasted specialty coffee from Taf, served with a smile until 4:00 pm. Your coffee break gets an upgrade with vegetarian and vegan sandwiches (on gluten-free bread, no less), sugar-free sweets and cakes, meaning completely guilt-free. Surprises include the highly nutritious matcha overnight oats and Sfakian pies. For an energy boost, grab an acai bowl with peanut butter, banana and granola, with absolutely no added sugar.

The black door opens at 12:00 PM and, through midnight, prepares the crispiest, most flavorful falafel ever. The philosophy is strictly plant-based. You will find gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian delicacies, along with sugar-free options. A must-order is the wrap made with handcrafted bread baked daily, warmly wrapping around fluffy falafel made using a traditional original recipe. The bread also comes in a gluten-free version, they’ve thought of everything. It comes accompanied by the incredible signature “Mama Ghanoush” house sauce, a twist on baba ghanoush made from zucchini, tahini and lemon. If that’s not your style, try the halloumi version, which is equally delicious and satisfying. Craving a burger instead? Their creation with beluga lentils and sweet potato brings a whole new dimension to vegan street food. Don’t skip the velvety signature hummus, a portion of chewy halloumi, the unbeatable dip with smoked eggplant and tahini and steaming seasonal soups that change regularly. To finish, try the fresh, guilt-free dessert of the day.

The curated wine list features labels from both Greek and international vineyards, including options by the glass for easy experimenting and pairing. If you’re looking for something stronger, try the aged tsipouro, the ultimate Greek nectar which, if you ask me, makes a top-tier pairing with the smoked eggplant and hummus.

So, Mama Ghanoush has two doors. I warmly encourage you to step through them. Looking for well-crafted specialty coffee? Quality, bold flavors? Both? You’ll find it all right here, plus a warm smile. You’ve just found your new favorite hangout.
