Striggla: The Marousi Gastro-Tavern Reconnecting Us with Our Culinary Roots

When we talk about the local food scene, it often feels like we are constantly chasing the next big trend, the most complex technique, or the flashiest presentation. But every now and then, a place comes along that reminds us why we fell in love with eating out in the first place. That is exactly what is happening at Striggla in Marousi. It’s a spot where tradition meets creativity without losing a single ounce of substance.

Housed in a space that once leaned heavily into industrial design, Striggla has pivoted toward a much warmer, more intimate aesthetic. With large wooden tables, velvet chairs, and soft, ambient lighting, the room immediately dials down the noise of the outside world, guiding your attention precisely where it belongs: the food. It hits that perfect sweet spot between a cozy neighborhood bistro and an elevated tavern.

At the culinary helm is the award-winning chef Thomas Matsas (the same creative mind behind Thirio in the center and Alemagou in Mykonos). At Striggla, Matsas invests heavily in real food. He takes humble, deeply traditional ingredients, things like cauliflower, sfela cheese, or liver and transforms them into brilliantly thought-out plates packed with intellect and imagination. It’s comfort food rooted in memory, but executed with serious fine-dining technique.

The menu shifts with the seasons, but the standout dishes show a real affinity for rich, soulful flavors. You can start your meal with the frygadeli, traditional Rumeli-style liver wrapped in caul fat, served alongside aromatic yogurt and a vibrant paprika oil. Then there is the lamb tagliata, cooked beautifully to preserve its tenderness, and a stellar short rib giouvetsi (orzo stew) that feels like a warm hug in a bowl. Even everyday vegetables are given center stage; a simple cauliflower dish or a tomato salad paired with soft feta and wild onion oil becomes something entirely memorable.

To complete the experience, the wine list is a thoughtfully curated showcase of Greek vineyards, offering the perfect counterpart to the heavy, rustic flavors coming out of the kitchen. And you will definitely want to leave room for dessert. The sweet finale is handled by pastry chef Lambros Zarkadoulas (of Montee fame), whose creations, like a clever, reimagined take on galaktoboureko, put the perfect exclamation point on the evening.

Striggla isn’t just about getting dinner, it’s an opportunity to pause, slow down, and reconnect with the flavors that define us. For anyone living in or visiting the northern suburbs, this honest, soul-satisfying gastro-tavern is an absolute must-visit.
