What can immaculate classic cuisine really mean? And how can the iconic specialties of Greek tradition be reinvisioned for «today» with creativity and respect? Retro Gastro answers these questions with boldness and generosity, charting its own culinary path at Thisio and downtown Athens.
Bold, because in an everchanging area, that is slowly losing the sense of community, between constant expropriation, new customs, new lodging; yet generous, having an attitude that aims to offer the best – from fresh ingredients by collaborating with over 90 micro-producers from all over Greece, or via the rich cellar that accommodates more than 200 labels of Greek wines.
The restaurant that established an elevated taste with small and big twists and that introduced perfect technique and photogenic presentation on our plate, has a lot of interesting news to share with us: Basic and fundamental is its renewed, winter menu, the arrival of the charismatic Chef Patron of ‘Melilotos’ Costas Siopidis, who recommends a total return to our Greek roots of «sharing», with frygadelli, yuvarlakia and other traditional Greek delicacies, always with the signature modernisations of Retro Gastro.
Then, there is also the intriguing proposition of having the most Greek-style brunch in the city, with suggestions such as egg fritters and kayanas, accompanied by delicious, single origin coffee and drinks; on Fridays and weekends served from 9:00 a.m., as well offering exiting tasting events with wine and food producers from all around Greece, every month.
All this in a building that is a living monument of past century architecture, a wonderful, two-story ‘neoclassical’ manor from 1872 that emits culture and positive vibes. Dividing the action between the big hall, the cellar in the basement with perfect conditions for the wine bottles and the cobblestone sidewalk where – weather permitting – has tables for the patrons.
